Description:
5” x 6”, (seed propagated). Otero Co., NM. A very rare form of Echinocereus fendleri growing where the grasslands of the Great Plains meet the Juniper-Pinon woodlands along the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains. A squat thick-stemmed form with wide, flattened, white and brown spines. The magenta flowers are spectacular and are followed by huge burgundy-red fruits that smell of strawberries. This fendleri form has excellent cold hardiness. A highly desirable native beauty. Two year old plants grown from garden- collected seed. Zone 5-9. Collection #SB 353.
ECHINOCEREUS fendleri: a wide ranging species from southern NM and AZ north into the Four Corners area of NM, AZ, CO, and UT. All varieties have huge violet-purple flowers and large red edible fruits. Stems are often solitary, but sometimes clustering to 3 or 4 stems. Easy to grow in well drained soils when keep dry in the winter and well mulched with gravel chips.
