David and Ava Salman David Salman was a recipient of the 2008 Great American Gardeners Award.

Spring of 2009 brings to our customers an exciting new group of plant introductions --many featured below are exclusive and can only be found at our High Country Gardens catalog and retail stores.

HCG founder David Salman dedicates his time to the nurturing incubation of new plants before their commencement to the public. From Agastache to Zauschneria, you can be sure that an innovative horticulturist has been at work; and for the past 25 years, Salman's colorful, water thrifty perennials have embellished landscapes across America.

Also a writer and speaker on the topic of Xeriscaping, David Salman is a new breed of Western garden muse. Read about each plant in our 2009 Spring catalog, and you will find that that it is honored with a thoughtful anecdote or colorful description -- like this one for Salvia Azurea introduced for the first time last year:

Salvia azurea"This is an unusually xeric, clear blue colored form of the lovely Sage grown from seed I collected from a patch of short prairie grass just east of Santa Fe, NM. The flowers of this collection are as blue as the NM sky on a September afternoon."

Browse our new spring plants and read their stories. Plan your spring garden, and ponder. David Salman suggests that you "...think color, texture and matching growing conditions. Discover your inner artist and plant your own living canvases."

Exclusive Plant Introductions:
You will find these great plants only at High Country Gardens!

High Country Gardens takes great pride in bringing new plants to the marketplace that are not available from other plant catalogs and nurseries. Many of these plants are a product of our ongoing breeding, selection and evaluation program. Show below is a preview of our horticultural highlight for 2009.

  • Our 2009 Plant of the Year!
Penstemon 'Blue Lips'Penstemon 'Blue Lips' (Blue Lips hybrid Beardtongue)
Discovered byHigh Country Gardens chief horticulturist David Salman, this showy evergreen Beardtongue hybrid is a delight in the late spring garden with its profuse display of bright blue-lipped, lavender throated flowers. ‘Blue Lips’ a real gem in the Western garden being a showy, long lived easy-to-grow wildflower hybrid. Plant it in a full sun site with infertile, well drained soil. Very resistant to browsing rabbits.

  • Phlox grayiiPhlox grayii (AZ Pink Phlox)
One of my favorite wildflowers, Arizona Pink Phlox puts on an amazing month-long late spring display of showy pink flowers that carpet the spreading stems of lustrous evergreen foliage. This selection is grown from seed collected by seedsman Alan Bradshaw in the rugged countryside of northern AZ. Phlox grayii is a small groundcover perfect for edging walks and planting into flagstone areas.

  • Lilium pardalinum Lilium pardalinum (Panther Lily)
One of our finest native lilies, the Panther Lily is native to the coastal mountain ranges of CA and southern OR. It blooms in mid-summer with large nodding glossy orange-red, red-tipped, maroon-spotted flowers. Plant Panther Lily in dappled shade spots with moisture retentive, compost enriched soil. Leave undisturbed once planted to allow this beauty to colonize its planting area.

  • Muhlenbergia reverchonii
    Muhlenbergia reverchonii(Autumn Embers Muhly Grass)
Bring fall into the xeric garden with our showy native ornamental grasses. Autumn Embers Muhly is one of the best, blooming in September with a haze of finely textured reddish-pink seed heads. A medium sized grass with thin, mid-green foliage, it is highly resistant to browsing deer. Native to a small area in north TX and southwestern OK, M. reverchonii is usable over much of the country thriving in heat, humidity and sub-zero winter temperatures.

  • Agapanthus 'Kinston Blue Strain'
Exclusive Heronswood lives on! Dan Hinkley’s cultivar ‘Kingston Blue’ crossed with ‘Cold Hardy White’ in my garden five years ago. From among seedlings grown from this seed, I selected the most vigorous, deep blue flowering plants to create the ‘Kingston Blue Strain.’ Cold hardy and deciduous, this compact grower blooms in mid-summer. Mulch heavily in cold winter climates to get the plants well established.

  • Verbena sp. ‘Annie!’ (Annie’s Perennial Verbena)
Tagetes leVerbena sp. ‘Annie!’ ‘Annie!’ is a truly cold hardy, long-lived, long blooming perennial Verbena. In the Denver area, the lightly fragrant, lavender-pink flowers start up in mid-spring (late March/early April) and are continuous through hard frost in October. Recently brought into cultivation as an heirloom plant from a Minnesota garden by
Kelly Grummons of Timberline Gardens in Arvada, CO. Great
    as a large scale groundcover.
  • ‘Summer Dreams’ Small Spaces Garden
Summer Dreams Small Spaces Garden(Dakota Sunshine Maximilian’s Sunflower)
Get big, easy-care color from this garden designed for a small sunny space. This pre-planned garden fits comfortably into a 5 ft. by 5 ft. flower bed. Blooming from mid-summer into early fall, the ‘Summer Dreams’ garden is suitable for planting in Zone 5-8 areas of the country.
